Something out of nothing

When I was putting away my 'experiments' from last week, that odd mis-shapened heart ended up next to one of the cameo settings. You know how sometimes two wrongs do make a right? Well, these two looked right together - especially after I added some paper and resin. I have to say that the style is a lot more rustic and - umm, imperfect - than my usual.

A length of copper chain and some Czech glass dangles - et voila! I had a necklace on my hands. I'm calling it 'My Weathered Heart'.

Now, do you think the necklace is pretty enough to go into my Etsy store? Or better yet - pretty enough for a giveaway? I've been wanting to try having a giveaway since I always find them great fun, but have never really had anything I thought people might want. I'd love to hear  from you and what you think.

More resin jewellery

As promised, here are photos of the resin pieces that didn't turn out so well.

You can see how the resin seeped into the paper in the corner of that pendant and in the top bit of the earring. I was really disappointed with the earring, especially since the other half of the pair turned out great. You can see that below:

My take-away from this? Make sure the paper is completely sealed before adding resin. I guess I was too impatient to check. Sigh.

Anyhow, I like the round pendant and the purple flower earrings (shown in my previous post) enough that I'll probably be listing them in my Etsy store.

I also made some bottlecap samples. I haven't decided what to do with them quite yet. I might turn them into simple fridge magnets, or maybe glue on some bails for pendants. What would your preference be?

Resin - my new best friend?

After all my trepidation about creating with resin, I find it pretty funny that I actually quite like playing with it. Especially now that I seem to be getting the hang of it. I made a few new pieces on the weekend - some of which turned out OK, and some of which didn't.

These are some that turned out alright - a pendant and matching earrings:

I'll try to post pics of those that didn't turn out so well soon.

Weekends...and something new

I wish 3-day weekends were the norm. There just isn't enough time on the weekends for me to do what I need/want to. Once I've done the cooking, cleaning and whatever chores that were ignored during the week, there aren't very many hours left for fun. I didn't do too badly this week though. I squeezed in lunch with friends, waded through most of the book I'm currently reading, visited the library and borrowed more books (including 2 on chainmaille) and best of all, made some jewellery. Well....just one bracelet, to be accurate.

You might remember the focal from my earlier post. It's a ceramic link from White Clover Kiln. I knew from the start that whatever I made with it would be strictly for me. And since I have very simple tastes in jewellery, I kept the design quite spare. Just some chain - I love how the oval links mirror the shape of the focal bead - a couple of dangles and a pewter clasp.

What did you do over the weekend? Did you make jewellery too? Or read a book? Whatever it was, I hope you had fun!

Pictures!

The earrings will be added to my shops this weekend. And finally, the necklace. I was going for asymmetrical but it's not something that comes naturally to me. It looks a little awkward to me and rather spare. I'm thinking of re-working it - maybe adding some beads on the other side.

What are your thoughts? Should I leave it as is? I'd love to hear your ideas and feedback. Oh, and the adorable owl pendant is from Etsy.com's brendabeads. Also from Etsy is Misspottery's ceramic trinket dish in the topmost pic. I spend way too much time on Etsy, y'all.

Done!

I finally got around to completing that crystal necklace I started weeks ago. All those wrapped loops took time. My fingers hurt a bit but the end result pretty much makes up for the pain. I used Swarovski crystals in various shades (and sizes) of blue. All wire is non-tarnish artistic wire and I even found the energy to make my own clasp. I'm now deciding whether to add it to my Artfire shop or give it away as a present. Hmm...decisions, decisions...

Charlatan?

Warning: this is not an upbeat post. If you're looking for sunshine and flowers, you'd do better reading another blog today. But please check back next week. Regular service should resume then.

I don't usually voice this out loud but, a lot of times, I feel like a charlatan when it comes to my jewellery-making. Growing up, I never thought of myself as being creative. Truth be told, I used to fail most of my art assignments in secondary school (high school). And by fail, I mean really badly - like 30/100 badly. I couldn't - and still can't - draw. Or paint. Or sketch. Or any of the things you expect creative types to do. I appreciated art though - art galleries are some of my favourite places - but I decided early on that I couldn't do art. After all, that was what my teachers repeatedly told me. And good student that I was, I listened to them and believed.

Until I was in mid-twenties when I began dabbling in crafts. To save my pennies, I made presents for friends and colleagues and got seriously into stencilling and decoupage. I stopped when work got hectic and I found I didn't quite have the time. Then about 3 years ago, in a bid to add something else to my life apart from work, I took a beading class at a community centre. I've been hooked on beads and jewellery-making ever since. But even now, I find it difficult to tell people I make jewellery. I'm regularly visited by self-doubt and I almost always question my design ideas. I still don't think I'm creative and I certainly don't see myself as an artist. I'm sure this perception holds me back. In fact, I know it does.

But I then I read this blog post about what it takes to be an artist. It was something of an eye-opener for me and although I'm not quite at the point where I can confidently announce to the world that 'why yes, I am an artist', I think I just might be on my way there.

I'm going to stop my navel gazing and post some eye candy now. Partly to thank anyone out there who waded through my rambling. Partly to add some colour to an otherwise boring post. But mostly to reassure myself that I am capable - on occasion - of thinking up (fairly) original and pretty designs.

Replicas

Remember the bellflower earrings I made and sold some weeks back? The photo's a couple of posts down. I liked how the wire frames I made mirrored the bell shape of the flower beads so much that I made replicas of the earrings yesterday - using 3 different colours of artistic wire. I paired silver-plated wire with some navy blue flower beads, gold-plated wire with purple flower beads and finally, brass-plated wire with green flower beads. All 3 pairs are listed in my Artfire shop. I think they're quite girly and romantic, which considering Valentine's Day is coming up, is rather apt really.

What do you think? Do you like them as much as I do? They're not perfect I know but I'm secretly quite proud of myself since it's the first time I've bothered to make a component - ie. the spirally wire frames - myself. I'd love to hear what you think.

New old jewellery

Looking through my posts, I'm beginning to see how this blog is slowly turning into a catalogue of my work. I'm not sure this is what I intended when I first began. But I think I like it. It's a bit like having a portfolio of sorts. Just online. Anyway, I'm posting photos of earrings I made as Christmas gifts this past December. After braving snow, sleet and rain - and goodness knows what else - in the last month, they've finally found their way to their intended owner in the US.

Special jewellery

I've started 2011 by agreeing to make some commissioned jewellery for an old schoolmate. We only recently re-connected via Facebook and I'm both pleased and honoured that she's asked me to make some very special items for her. This from only seeing photos I've uploaded on the Net.

First up is a rose quartz bracelet because she says she always feels calmer when she wears this stone. I'm not ecstatic with what I came up with, but it's serviceable and will pass muster. I think.

Apologies for the poor picture-taking. I'm without my regular camera since it's in HK with my sisters :-(. So I had to take photos with my dodgy old camera instead.

My schoolmate then requested for 2 sets of prayer beads - or tasbih as we call them - which she wanted to give as gifts to friends who are going through rough times. Again, she asked for rose quartz beads. It never occurred to me to make prayer beads but I loved how they turned out. More than that, I'm thankful for being given the chance to make something meaningful with my beads.

Go me! Part 2

I got it wrong. My jewellery's been featured in two other Artfire collections. Isn't that great? I can feel the warm fuzzies descending on me as I type LOL. I never thought my Lovebirds and See You Later Alligator earrings would be pretty enough to be selected.....but they were! Unfortunately, one of the collections isn't available anymore so I can't showcase it here. But the other one - featuring my See You Later Alligator earrings - is, so go check it out!

Go me!

I've been featured in an Artfire collection! Yay me!! My Heart of Gold earrings was selected by Artfire member Juicy for her Valentines' heart-themed collection.

It's the second time my work has been picked for a collection, and I gotta tell you that it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy to know that my peers think my jewellery is pretty enough to be included in their beautiful curated collections. Go check it out - every item is drool-worthy.

New autumn jewelry

Even though there aren't seasons where I live, I've always been partial to Fall. I think it's all those lovely warm colours that appeal to me - and the cooler weather. Anyhow, I was inspired last week to make this necklace. It's part of my bid to slowly  but surely use up my bead stash. So that I can buy new beads LOL.

I used some leftover faux suede cord, 5mm Swarovski crystals in a range of autumnal colours (burgundy, topaz, smoked topaz etc), fire-polished rondelles and an antique brass dragonfly pendant. I actually like how it turned out. It's now in my Artfire and Etsy shops waiting for someone to give it a home.

What to do with this pendant?

I'm stuck. I messed around with Diamond Glaze last weekend and made this pendant. I had some issues with air bubbles but in the end everything turned out pretty well. I don't like the pendant frame however. It reminds me of Star Trek somehow - very sci-fi like. Which doesn't quite seem to go with the floral design of the paper (which I love btw). So - my question now is....what do I do with it? Stick a pin on the back for a brooch? Or use it in a necklace? Maybe a bag charm? Hmm, that might be an idea. A kooky bag charm is easier to carry off I think.

By special request

An old friend surprised me a few weeks back by asking if I would make some jewellery for her. She's started being a little more adventurous in terms of her fashion and was lamenting that she didn't have jewellery that could match her new clothes. She specifically wanted a long necklace. And if I could come up with some earrings, that would be great too.

I decided from the start that I would stick to a silver/neutral tone for the pieces so she could wear them with almost anything in her wardrobe. And I also knew that the pieces would have to be fairly simple and understated, while incorporating some 'bling' if possible. This is what I came up with.

Selling on Etsy

If you look at the sidebar on the right, you'll notice that I've started selling my jewelry on Etsy. Yes, I finally got around to doing it. I hesitated for a long time before I took the plunge. It was partly the listing and transaction fees that put me off - what can I say? I'm cheap. But mostly it was because I'd saddled myself with a less than stellar name. I started the Etsy account mainly to buy items, not sell them, so I thought up a name quite hurriedly thinking that it was cool. How wrong I was. So you'll have to pardon the oddly embarrassing name of my Etsy store. I hope it won't put you off visiting. I'm going for a more classic, understated feel for this store - so you'll find a lot more sterling silver and gold-filled pieces than on my Artfire shop. The pieces I list will also be more of what I would personally wear....simple, pretty pieces that aren't too over-the-top. Of the 4 items I listed, I think my favourite would have to be this necklace. I'd wear it in a heartbeat. What about you?

Pics...finally

Ta-dah! Here's a photo of that necklace I mentioned in my previous post. Finally. I don't think my photography skills are getting any better LOL. Anyway, hope you like what I made. I'd love any and all comments. For the record, the beads are natural white wood with a laminated banana bark finish. I got them from Fusionbeads about a month ago. The chain is gold-plated and I finished the necklace off with a gold-filled twisted toggle clasp. The necklace has quite a heft to it, thanks to the sizeable beads. I think it'll look great with a white tee and jeans. Off now to add it to my Artfire Store.

Finally...

Yay! I finally got off my butt and started a blog. I also started an Artfire shop - thanks to a dear friend who's been pestering me (or should that be encouraging me?) to do something about my jewelry-making hobby. This blog will be about my on-going obsession with beads and the battles I have with creativity - or lack thereof.
